The doctor had said that he had died by some sort of fit or apoplexy. Though, not everybody was so sure about that. Then, Joe says there is no reason why they should stay in the town anymore. Ludlow does not understand why they have to leave. Before he could say why, Perigoe came in and apologized for the town and returning a book he bought from her. It turned out Joe did not kill Jeremiah; it was a pie, yet again, killed him. Though that remained a secret. Then, Ludlow went with Joe to start a new pawnshop in a new town, without telling anyone. As they were on their way to a new town, Joe told Ludlow everything. Now they are going through a tunnel and Ludlow doesn't know what's on the other side.

Joe wanted to show Ludlow someone and it turned out to be Mr. Jellico! Joe gave Ludlow his own book of secrets, and asked him to one day be, the secret pawnbroker. Ludlow then accepts. Then it was time for Ludlow to give up his secret, so that it may be in the book of secrets.

Chapter 43
Joe pulled Saluki (the frog) out of the pull string bag. He allowed Ludlow to hold the frog to see if she would trust him. She did trust him. Then, Joe gave Ludlow a note that said Saluki was a Phyllobates tricolor frog. It would seep poison out of its skin when scared of a predator. It was not the pie that had killed Jeremiah, but the frog. Ludlow was in utter shock that he had gotten away with it. Then, he realized that it still wasn't Joe's fault. That Jeremiah had bought it upon himself.

The page was torn from, Amphibians of the Southern Hemisphere.
Phyllobates Tricolor
This frog is a colorful thing, part of the Poison Dart Frag family, or Dendrobatidae. It is mainly found in a native rain forest in South America. Whe the frog is under stress, it will eject poison from the pores on its back. This poison will burn the skin and flow through the bloodstream. It will bring rapid muscle and respiratory paralysis. This will always lead to death. The native Indians there will dip there arrows in there poison, Hence the name of Poison Dart. Perhaps another time. Ludlow had one more question though. What was the deal with the wooden leg that was always in the front window of the pawnshop? Though, Joe just said, "It will be useful one day." Ludlow insisted that he answers, though Joe does not. He simply says, "A man must be allowed at least one secret, Ludlow, don't you think?"

Chapter 46
So, in the end, Horatio Cleaver, never told anyone about the poisoned pie. In fact, he was relieved to find that no one had bitten into the bit at all! That the doctor's theory was correct. Jeremiah was buried in the Pagus Parvus cemetery. What surprised most people was that a lot of people from miles around attended the funeral. Though, there was very little weeping, but a lot of drinking and cheering afterwards. Though just a few days after he was buried, his body was robbed and sold to an anatomy school in the city, where a surgeon cut into his chest, and found that his heart was unnaturally small. As for Polly, well there was nothing for her left in Pargus Parvus. So, she hitched a ride to the city, believeing it couldn't be as bad as Ludlow says.
